Our Story
Mercer Melbourne opened its doors in 2009, in a quiet Carlton terrace.
Helen spent fifteen years in retail buying, first at David Jones and later for a small Melbourne fashion house, before she'd had enough of watching quality slip and prices climb. She wanted to build something different. A boutique where the clothes were chosen the way they used to be, not by what would sell fastest, but by what would last.
Mark had grown up in Brunswick, the son of an Italian tailor who ran a small shop on Sydney Road for thirty years. He'd watched his father measure shoulders, mark hems, and turn away customers who wanted things made quickly rather than well. By the time Mark was old enough to work, the shop had closed. The industry had moved on. He hadn't.
The two of them met in 2007 at a fabric showroom in Collingwood. They started talking about wool, about how the good stuff was getting harder to find, how the supply chains had thinned out, how nobody seemed to care anymore. They kept talking. Two years later, they signed a lease on a small space in Carlton and called it Mercer, an old English word for a merchant of fine cloth.
The first year was lean. The second was better. By the third, they had regulars.
Melburnians who'd come in for one piece and stay for an hour, who'd bring their husbands, who'd send their daughters.
For fifteen years, that's how Mercer Melbourne worked. A small boutique with a loyal following. No website. No advertising. Just the door on Lygon Street, the quiet hum of the city outside, and the people who kept coming back.
Why we finally went online
Honestly, we resisted it for a long time.
We liked the slowness of it. We liked knowing our customers by name. We liked that buying a coat at Mercer felt like a small occasion, not a transaction.
But the same question kept coming up. A regular's daughter would move to Sydney and ask if we could send her something. A long-time customer would retire to the coast and miss the boutique. A friend in Adelaide had heard about us and wondered if there was any way to order.
For years we said no, because we didn't have the setup.
This year, we built one.
Same boutique, now online
Mercer Melbourne is still the same shop on Lygon Street. The same wools, the same fits, the same approach. What's changed is that you can now reach us from anywhere in Australia: Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, the coast, the country.
If you've ever walked past our window and wondered, or heard about us from a friend, this is your invitation.
Welcome to Mercer.
